Keeping the Kiddos Entertained in a Small-town
Kids can have more fun in a small town than a big city! They can find fun around every corner, and you can rest easy knowing they’re safe in their own hometown. In a small town like Celina, there’s a wide world to explore without dealing with the hustle and bustle of the big city. They can explore nature in the parks, neighborhoods, and open spaces, and they can try out a lot of different activities like sports, library programs, community events, and volunteering.
Here are some ideas to keep your kiddos entertained.
Parks and Rec
Kids can have a great time in one of Celina’s city parks. They can play baseball, go fishing, and have fun in the playground at Old Celina Park, and there’s tennis, horseshoes, and basketball in Founders Station Park. Soon, they’ll be able to hang out in Wilson Creek Park, too. Celina’s next big park spans 100 acres and will feature several athletic fields and courts, playgrounds, disc golf, and more!
Sports
If your kids like sports, they have a lot of choices in Celina. In spring and fall, they can play baseball, softball, soccer, and 7-on-7 football through Celina Parks & Recreation’s youth sports programs. They can also play flag football in the fall and basketball in winter. Be sure to sign up before the deadlines listed on this webpage.
Library
Celina Public Library has a lot of fun programs for kids of all ages. Every Thursday after school, they can enjoy exchanging cards at Pokemon Trading, and on the third Thursday of each month, they can create masterpieces during LEGO Building Hour. Smaller kids have Toddler Tuesdays and Baby Storytime on Wednesdays. And, the library adds special events just about every month, like the Cat in the Hat celebration planned for March. So, keep an eye out for more fun things to do.
Volunteering
Volunteering is a good way for kids to have fun and support their community at the same time. The city has volunteer opportunities for ages 16 and up like working at a city-hosted event and helping the police department and public library. Kids can also volunteer with community organizations to help make life better for everyone.
They can help Cornerstone NCT provide assistance by working at their resale shop and at fundraisers. Collin County Animal Services needs help with cleaning, feeding, and walking animals. Kids also can help the Rotary Club of Preston Trail of Celina & Gunter feed the hungry, tutor children, maintain parks, and more. Kids can help collect, organize, and distribute food or work at the resale shop or special events for Grace Bridge and join a team that helps children, families, teachers, and at-risk youth improve their lives through Helping Hands of Celina.
Events
Celina has a lot of city-sponsored events that kids will enjoy. The next one is Touch-A-Truck in March, when kids can hop on board some of the city’s massive vehicles and talk with people who run them every day. Then, beginning in April, bring the whole family out to see free Movie Night on the Square. Then there’s Celina Cajun Fest in May and many more throughout the year.
